My name is Howard Deutch.  I’ve been practicing law since 1973. During that time I have written a lot of legal forms.

Some of them were very specialized.  But most of them were “standard” forms with a few modifications to fit a specific situation. 

How do Lawyers create legal forms? 

If you go to a lawyer to have a legal form prepared, the lawyer will do exactly what I do when a client comes to me. 

I analyze the situation and the client’s wishes and create a legal form that meets the client’s specific requirements.

Sometimes I need to create a very specialized legal document from scratch.  But most of the time I start with a “standard” form from my form files and modify it to meet the client’s needs.

You can do the same thing up to a point.

When you need a legal form, get a well-written legal form that you think fits your situation and fill it out.  Add any other provisions you think you need (don’t worry about not knowing “legalese” your lawyer will fix the language if necessary).

Then take it to a lawyer so he or she can review it and, if necessary, make necessary modifications.

Most of the time no change will be necessary.

Even if the lawyer needs to make changes, your cost will usually be much less than if you had given him or her a well-drafted legal form to start from.

Where Should You get Your Legal Forms?

There are plenty of legal forms on the internet.  Some are good and some are worse than useless.  Some cost money and some are free.

And that’s the problem.  Which legal forms should you use?  Which legal forms can you trust?

Why Am I giving these legal forms away?

This is my grandson, Adam. He is a happy, healthy young man now. But when Adam was 5 years old he was diagnosed with leukemia, a kind of cancer in which the bone marrow makes abnormal white blood cells that crowd out normal blood cells.

Adam went thru 38 months of intensive chemotherapy. That chemotherapy saved his life.

I think a lot about what Adam had to go thru. I think about all the other people who will have to go thru what Adam did. And I want to make it easier for them.

Over the past 10 years, the survival rate for leukemia patients aged 15 to 19 increased from 33.0% to 60.4%. That’s the good news. The bad news is the nearly 40% that did not survive.

We must find a cure for leukemia. We must save the other 40%. And I want to do my part to help speed the cure.
